Creator Statement
NEWBORN started with one image I couldn’t shake: a group of street kids who could survive a gang war but had no idea how to hold a baby. I had always wanted to build a dark story inside 1970s New York, initially imagining it as a stage play set almost entirely in one abandoned apartment. Inspired by The Warriors, the world expanded, but the contradiction remained the same. I wanted to place innocence in the hands of people society had already judged—and see whether something as fragile as a newborn could reveal who they really were.
Filmmaker Bio
Jan Latto is a Colombian actor, writer, director, and creator based in New York. He is the creator, writer, co-director, and lead actor of NEWBORN, a coming-of-age crime drama set in the Bronx in 1979. His work often explores youth, identity, found family, and morally complex characters. His previous projects include BIT, nominated at the India Catalina Awards, MASS, an official selection at the Toronto International Short Film Awards, and If I Can’t Have You, selected for the 2026 ALZA Festival.
